Redesigning the Onboarding Experience to Help Detailers Complete Setup

Overview
Detail Connect is a SaaS CRM platform that helps mobile auto detailers manage bookings, customers, scheduling, invoicing, payments, and day-to-day business operations.
After reviewing the onboarding funnel, the team identified an opportunity to improve the experience for new users. While many users successfully created an account, a noticeable number did not complete the onboarding process, preventing them from reaching the free trial.
Rather than changing the overall setup flow, I redesigned the onboarding experience by introducing guided questions, clearer explanations, and contextual information that helped detailers understand why each step mattered and how the information would be used throughout the product.
The Problem:
Many users created an account but did not complete onboarding, preventing them from reaching the free trial.
The Goal:
Redesign the onboarding experience to make business setup easier to understand while encouraging more users to complete onboarding.
Users:
Mobile auto detailers.
My Contribution:
End-to-end UX/UI design, onboarding experience design, content and interaction design, prototyping, design iterations, developer handoff, implementation review.
Challenge
The existing onboarding collected the necessary business information but provided little context about why each step was important. New users were often asked to complete setup without understanding how the information would be used throughout the platform.
The redesign focused on improving the onboarding experience without changing the overall setup process. Instead of simply requesting information, each step was designed to better guide new users by explaining the purpose behind the questions and making the experience feel more approachable.
Solution
Key Design Decisions
Guiding users instead of collecting information:
Rather than presenting onboarding as a series of forms, I redesigned the experience to guide detailers through setting up their business one step at a time.
By introducing dedicated onboarding screens and clearer transitions between steps, the experience felt more structured and easier to follow.
Design Impact:
Breaking the setup process into guided steps reduced the feeling of completing a long form while helping users better understand their progress.

Explaining why information matters:
I wrote contextual descriptions throughout the onboarding experience to explain why specific information was being requested and how it would be used within Detail Connect.
Instead of asking users to simply provide business details, the onboarding connected each step to a meaningful outcome inside the product.
Design Impact:
Providing context helped make onboarding feel more purposeful and reduced uncertainty during business setup.

Making business setup feel more approachable:
I introduced a welcome experience, guided onboarding questions, and supporting content throughout the setup process to reduce uncertainty and help new users understand what to expect before completing each step.
Design Impact:
Setting clear expectations and providing guidance throughout onboarding helped reduce uncertainty and encouraged users to continue through the setup process.

Before & After
The redesigned onboarding retained the existing setup flow while introducing new guidance, clearer explanations, and a more engaging experience for first-time users.

The final design focused on helping detailers understand each step before reaching the free trial.
Outcome

The final experience introduced guided onboarding screens, contextual explanations, and clearer business setup while maintaining compatibility with the existing onboarding process.
